How upset did the Golden Globe nominations make me this year?
Oh… award shows. I have a hate-mostly
hate-secretly love relationship with them. I think the selection process is
political and utterly flawed, yet I can’t stop watching them [And complaining
about them].
Here is a summary of what I have been ranting
about throughout the day:
For years I have complained about The Good Wife getting way too many
nominations. Not because I don’t like the show, but because I think there are
others that are better. Well… this time around, The Good Wife didn’t get a nomination. But now I am wishing it did,
because you know what replaced it? Well, Empire.
Yeah… I like Empire, I watch Empire. But let’s face it. It is an
outrageous [oftentimes fun] soap. In no way better than… say Orphan Black, House of Cards, The Bastard Executioner,
Banshee, Hannibal, Scandal, Downton Abbey, The Americans, Manhattan and I
could go on forever.
Now about the comedies. When did Mozart in the Jungle start getting
recognition? Did Transparent suddenly
make people get Amazon Prime? It looks that way. Is this show actually good? Do
I need to watch it? These are not rhetorical questions, by the way. I am
seriously asking.
I don’t want to get too much into the actress/actor
categories, because I am afraid I might get in trouble. In other words, there
are at least a couple of nominated actors that – in my opinion – don’t deserve
the recognition. But fine… talent is in the eye of the beholder sometimes… However, I do need to clearly state that –
once again – Tatiana Maslany was robbed! [and no Peter Dinklage either... that's just wrong] I am just glad Rami Malek got
nominated, because snubbing him would have been an actual crime against
television.
What about you? Who deserved a nod and didn't get it? Which nominations confused/enraged you?

Well, I agree with you on the unspoken actress who shouldn't have been nominated. And you're probably aware that I am rather displeased that Sam Heughan didn't get a nod for Outlander, although I am very very pleased that the show & other actors from it finally got recognised.
ReplyDeleteAgree about Sam Raimi, & from the same show I was happy to see the nom for Christian Slater.
As far as shows go, I don't watch Empire or The Good Wife so can't comment there...but I really wish we'd seen The Leftovers or Bloodline, or Orphan Black or our little fave Banshee nominated somehow someway.

I said smth similar about Sam... if they were nominating Outlander actor... he def deserved it (really happy about Tobias tho). I love all your show suggestions, I can tell you that those are all better than Empire IMO...
DeleteI remember when Banshee first came out, I predicted that it would get the SOA award treatment (meaning no nominations nor awards) and I was sadly right. Voters can be so simultaneously conservative and trendy... it can get annoying.
I know what you mean about Banshee...so weird really, the few times it is ever mentioned in the media it's praised all over the place - yet when it come to awards time it doesn't seem to be on anyone's radar, not even mentioned, let alone nominated. Hmmmph.
DeleteAnd (as I sit here watching this weeks AHS), I realised I neglected to mention a couple of other things that greatly annoyed me abt the noms:
Lady GaGa. Okay, I admit I have been moderately impressed by her performance in what is a very (imo) substandard season of AHS that did NOT deserve the nom...but impressed in the "okay, she isn't awful, she can act" sort of way. NOT in a "OMG she should win awards way". She's definitely a capable actress, but the part itself is somewhat of a one-note caricature. Makes it hard to justify the nomination. At least that's my opinion!
And, Flesh and Bone. Okay, I'm pleased for Starz, & yes I only watched a couple of eps so far, but like you I'm not convinced it deserves that accolade. I haven't watched any further yet, because frankly I found it a bit too 'soapy'...And then the incest bit was just too much, turned me off instead of making me sympathetic. Perhaps if they'd waited another ep or so, when we cared more abt the character.
AND...(finally)...a good point! So pleased Jamie Lee Curtis got a nom for Scream Queens. I think she's been awesome (to use an appropriate word!)
Oh and I have no idea why my first response posted twice. Let's see what happens this time!

Hmmm no idea what is up with the double posting... oh well, better than no post I guess.
DeleteI have this theory that voters are too conservative and turn away from 'violent' shows... until they become hits and then they try to seem informed so they watch them. Because yes... Banshee is super violent. But so is Game of Thrones and frankly I am surprised that show, with the whole fantasy element, in in the voters' radar. I am thrilled it is, I do love GOT and it is a push for fantasy that doesn't happen much but... surprised.
Re: F&B... it only gets soapier. We were just talking about it on twitter. It has the canvas to be a good show. Edge is fine, I like edgy, but not when they just try to make it edgy for the sake of being edgy. Like the whole incest plot [which only gets worse as the show progresses] has no point. And they attempt to make you sympathetic, which only made me more uncomfortable. Oppositely, on GOT the incest plot is supposed to make you uncomfortable and is one more thing to dislike Cersei. Also, it has actual implications on the events of the show. In F&B they could take it out or replace it with some other trauma and the show could go on as usual. Proof that it is not necessary.
I honestly just watch it for the dancing. And... Sarah Hay, had the same reaction you had with Lady Gaga. I thought, OK, she is doing Ok for someone who is not a professional actress [Irina Dovorovenko was better IMO], but not in a "give her an award" kind of way. I also thought that an actual actress may have done more with the role, take it to a more extreme/darker place.
yup - it is all so political....and yup so many good shows are never even mentioned. oh well. and regarding the unnamed actress, what's up with that? i mean why again?:)
ReplyDeleteI cannot figure out what is so brilliant about her! Usually I can say something like "I dislike her/him, but I suppose he is a good actor" but with her... I just find her adequate (and annoying IMO)... I can't understand the appeal, I just can't... (as an actress and a person)
