First (and last) Impressions: Best Time Ever

NBC TUESDAYS 10/9C

Premise: Neil Patrick Harris hosts and anything can happen.

Verdict: Sorry Neil Patrick Harris, I adore you, but No.

I am a writer and, as I have mentioned before, I don’t have much love for unscripted TV. Having said that, I do watch the occasional competition show (So you Think you Can Dance, Project Runway) and variety/talk show (Hollywood Game Night, Ellen). So I decided to give this one a go… mostly because I love NPH and I thought I could watch anything with him. Turns out I was wrong.

I wasn’t expecting to be excited or become a fan of this show, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so bad either. The first episode had guest presenter Reese Witherspoon [I assume she is good friends with Neil because why else would she do this?] and a series of awkward segments where NPH pretends to be in Cocktail, crashes a wedding, gets all stalkery with the audience and zip lines with Reese [that was probably exciting for them – if they actually did it – but boring to watch].

There was one sort of interesting segment where Neil auditions undercover for The Voice. But that is the type of thing I want to watch on a YouTube clip, not sit around for an hour of filler to get there. Plus, although the idea was funny, the execution wasn’t the greatest.

I am not sure why this isn’t better… NPH is a great host and he is funny, but the producers seem to think they are in the 60s or something.

Should you watch it? No, there are so many better things to do with your time. If you love Neil just watch old episodes of HIMYM or even Doogie Howser M.D.
