Finally an award show that had some shockers
Big Farewell to 30
Rock
The show didn’t win but Alec Baldwin won his 7th
SAG award and best of all Tina Fey won the Female
Actor, Comedy Series award . I
don’t have enough words to express how much I love Tina Fey and I am glad the
Actors’ community agrees with me. It is 30 Rock’s
last year and I am glad to see her get some deserved recognition. Also, her
speech was one of the funniest of the night. She made a great Lena Dunham/Amy
Poehler joke and a hilarious plea to “just tape The Big Bang Theory for once!” Please, let’s all do that next
Thursday. For Tina.
“It is so good to be
bad”
That is how Bryan Cranston
started his acceptance speech after nabbing the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award.
I’ve been saying this all throughout award season: Bryan Cranston is the best.
Nothing against Damian Lewis, but I am glad to see this one go to Bryan. He is
truly one of the greatest actors of TV history and he was gracious enough to
profusely thank Vince Gilligan for giving him the ‘role of his career’. Also
this is his first SAG for playing Walter White, can you believe it? It was
about time.
SAG, not as trendy as
the Golden Globes
And I don’t mean that in a bad
way. New and edgy is good, but sometimes I feel Golden Globes just pick winners
that are getting a lot of buzz and try too hard to be hip and trendy; which is
why Girls has been winning everything
lately. You don’t get more new and edgy than Girls. SAG voters didn’t seem too concern about what is on trend
(except for Jennifer Lawrence, I guess). They picked veterans like Tina Fey and
Alec Baldwin, resisted the urge to give Homeland
more than one award, gave Modern Family Best Comedy Ensemble (OK,
that was a little boring) and they seem to be the only award show that still
remembers Edie Falco and Nurse Jackie exist.
An American Syndicate
grants Big Award to a cast of Brits
Probably the biggest shocker of
the night was Downton Abbey winning Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a
Drama Series over Homeland, Mad Men,
Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire. I
absolutely did not see that happening. I thought it was going to go to Homeland but I was hoping for Breaking Bad or even Mad Men. I didn’t think Downton was even in the running but I
got to say it was a great surprise! The cast members were as shocked as I was.
There were only a handful of the cast members, all from ‘downstairs’ except for
Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and whatever Branson (Allen Leech) is considered these
days [middle of the stairs?]. The designated speaker was Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis
Logan), and she is such a lovely lady! I just wish they had let Allen do the
talking in that pretty accent of his. Also, I would have loved to see Jessica
Brown Findlay and all the other cast members, but still it was a shocker of the
good kind!
Again Kevin Costner?
At this point I would have taken
anyone over Kevin Costner… and I mean, anyone. I was hoping for Ed Harris, but
I would have taken ANYONE. I am bored with Kevin Costner winning everything; he
doesn’t even show up anymore. I don’t, in any way, think he is a bad actor, but
after watching Hatfields and McCoys, I
really don’t get why he keeps winning. He gave a good performance as usual but
it is nothing extraordinary while Ed Harris channeling John McCain was
incredible. Maybe voters don’t really have time to watch miniseries or TV
movies…
I have to say that I was much more pleased with the results
of the SAGs than the Golden Globes. Award shows have been annoyingly
predictable lately and I am glad I was finally surprised by some of the
results. Way to go Actors.
